Interview: Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Or Orlando for those who don’t speak Dinosaur – Skyped in from Oxford, UK last Wednesday evening to chat about his upcoming Australian Tour, dance auditions and Melbourne’s temperamental weather cycle…

On par with ‘Peter Piper’ in getting your tongue twisted, the name Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs doesn’t stem from any childhood fantasies, just simply something ridiculous. Orlando sympathises with the fact that his stage name is a lot to spit out and is happy with the abbreviation of TEED to avoid any verbal mishaps.

During his early teen years, Orlando’s musical interests were highly influenced by his older siblings who introduced him to the world of dance. He picked up a turntable and began digging for records – Even though he had no idea what he was looking for. At first he was into rave and early jungle, but over the last five years his interests have shifted to house and techno. Since these early beginnings TEED has broken into the dance music scene in a big way with singles, ‘Household Goods’, ‘Trouble’ and personal favorite ‘Garden’. His debut album is set to land in the first half of next year.

The Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs live show has toured internationally and even made an appearance at UK festival, Glastonbury. More recently Orlando played at I Love Techno, which also featured performances from the likes of Boys Noize, Cassius and Chase & Status to name a few. He summed up the experience with one word – Crazy, the highlight act being Gesaffestien, who he mentioned was doing massive things in Europe at the moment.

After such performances alongside the biggest artists in the world, there is still one that takes the cake for Orlando. “Melt Festival in Germany, I played at 3am in the morning and there was just this amazing connection. Not only between myself and the crowd, everyone was on the same level…The atmosphere was amazing – Everybody really fucking danced”.

Orlando shall be bringing his live show to our shores at the beginning of 2012, his first visit to our humble land. The show comes equipped with two dancing girls alongside the man. Another main feature of TEED’s live performance is his totally enormous kickass headpiece featured in the second film clip for hit single, ‘Garden’. Although it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore as he informed me of a falling out with said headpiece. Yet he was quick to let me know to expect some new headgear for his tour down under…

I asked about his expectations of Australia to which he swiftly replied, “It’s going to be really hot, right?” I informed him of the lack of summer we had last year but to come prepared for a warm trip. This excited him, “It’s cold here” he chuckled.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs plays at the I OH YOU Party on January 3rd at Roxanne Parlour with support from WTRS and myself. Enquire here for tickets. Now.
